Is that Assignment Worth It?

Updated: Feb 1

The assignments teachers assign to students shape the learning experience. It is crucial for educators to ensure that these assignments are not time fillers (aka time wasters), but are purposefully designed to align with standards and provide students with opportunities to apply strategies and showcase their mastery of skills and knowledge. Assignments should be relevant to students’ learning.

Does it align to standards?

Assignments should serve as stepping stones toward achieving educational standards. They act as benchmarks, guiding both educators and students on the journey of academic progress. By aligning assignments with standards, teachers ensure that classroom activities contribute meaningfully to students' overall learning objectives. I know some teachers disagree with this notion. But we need to really consider the time we have and the purpose of what we are doing with students. An assignment doesn't have to be boring or too rigorous to align to standards. It just needs to make sense.

Does it provide opportunities for mastery?

Assignments should be more than just tasks. Assignments should be opportunities for students to demonstrate their mastery of skills and content knowledge. Demonstration of mastery can come in the form of writing, presentations, podcasting, and/or long-term projects. No matter the form of demonstration, assignments must provide a platform for students to showcase their understanding, critical thinking, and application of learned concepts.

Is it a time-waster?

In the pursuit of effective education, there is no room for assignments that are simply to fill the time. Teachers must critically assess the purpose of each task they assign and its contribution to student learning. Assignments that lack clear educational goals or fail to align with standards can slow down the learning process and diminish the overall quality of instruction. How do you feel when you are providing time-filler assignments when you are the learner? You probably feel disrespected because your time is worth more than that.

Does the assignment fit into the learning journey?

Reflection is a powerful tool for educators to ensure that assignments serve their intended purpose. Ask yourself:

  • Does this assignment align with the curriculum standards?

  • Does it provide students with the opportunity to demonstrate mastery?

  • Is the task meaningful and relevant to their learning journey?

  • How does this assignment contribute to the overall instructional goals?

By regularly reflecting on these questions, educators can refine their approach to assignments and make informed decisions about what truly belongs in the classroom.

Am I maximizing instructional time?

Time is precious in the classroom (and in life), and every minute should be dedicated to fostering student learning. Thoughtful consideration of assignments ensures that instructional time is maximized. When assignments are purposeful, aligned to standards, and designed for mastery, they contribute significantly to the educational journey.

What We Ask Students to Do MATTERS

In the ever-evolving world of education, the relevance of assignments cannot be overstated. Assignments must be purposefully aligned with standards, providing students with opportunities to showcase their mastery of skills and knowledge. Teachers, as stewards of learning, must reflect on the purpose of each assignment to eliminate time wasters and maximize the impact of instructional time. By doing so, educators empower students to engage meaningfully with their education and reach academic achievement.
